Career-family balance is a common concern for most people. However, it is important to understand that the smallest changes can produce the most powerful effects.
I often worked jobs that required evening hours and weekends. The question is: what can we do?
1. A moment of gratitude in the morning
When you wake up in the morning, do not jump out of bed for a workout right away, or drag yourself to the bathroom. Sit up straight, relax and close your eyes. Say to yourself, “I am grateful to those who support me, believe in me and are always there for me.” Say it in deep breath between each time you say it, and I recommend saying it for a full five minutes. When you open your eyes and look at everything around you – keep that moment of gratitude with you, throughout your day, and remind yourself how you can not wait to get home to your loving family.
2. Coaching partners
Start your day with a stretch with your family and exercise together. All you need is 10 minutes. Achieving two on one: exercise and family time!
3. Family playlist
In your shared streaming service, create a playlist of your family’s favorite music. When you take a break from work or feel that a negative moment brings out the best in you, listen to this music, think about your family and regain your focus. Music is a powerful voice and has the ability to influence our mood. Your family playlist will energize you and improve your mood.
4. Daily phone call
At least once a day, call or send a message to your spouse or children and repeat Stevie Wonder: “I just called to say I love you, I just called to say how much I care.” Let your family know they are always on your mind. Even in front of a big deadline or an important meeting, this moment will calm you down and make your family smile!
5. Clarify your work hours and expectations
Talk to your boss about his / her expectations of you regarding your time and position in order to cultivate a mutual and clear understanding of your role. If your job involves evenings / weekends and tasks like answering emails, working from home or extra time needed for special projects, set a strategy and discuss with your boss how to meet those expectations so you do not feel overwhelmed and drawn between your family and your work. If you are a new parent, have family members who require special needs, or have personal circumstances that require attention, raise them as needed so that if you have to leave early, there is an understanding of why this is so.
6. Socializing at work
It is common for colleagues to walk around after work. Say yes when your significant other and / or children are also busy. It will balance things out more. There are times to drink beers with colleagues, but there are also times to go home, relax, watch a movie and just have fun with the family.
7. Buffer moment
We all deal with a lot at work and can sometimes get upset or upset. Remember that you are a human, not a robot, so it is acceptable to have a buffer moment for these feelings. Take a deep breath, move on to your happy area involving your family, think about how your energy can be used for something else, and move on.
8. Philosophy of Yoda

- Arrange your desktop so that your to-do list is in front of you, review papers will be next to your to-do list, and keep a pen ready with blank paper to take additional notes. Do not always rely on your computer; Trust yourself and your mind.
9. Dinner without phone and TV
At the dining table, leave your phone and turn off the TV. Focus on your family, not work, and use that as a time to bring all your energy, your aura and your being in the moment with the people who support and believe in what you do, and love you for being able to do what you do.
10. Your work log
Keep a two-week work diary: Try to keep track of every quarter of an hour of your work time. Then, slice and attack any inefficiency! It will bring balance to your day and yield a proper coffee break, a breath of fresh air and time to make a daily family phone call!
