8 Career Tips From People Who Landed an Internship at BlackRock | Job and Internship Advice, Companies to Work for and More

As a current student or recent graduate, one question you may be asking yourself is how can you prepare yourself for an interview and secure a job. But given that interviews and submission processes differ from company to company, you may have found yourself lost and unsure of where to start.

In order to help guide professionals at the beginning of their careers through interviews and applications, we examined in depth the process at one of the largest asset managers in the world – BlackRock. To better understand how candidates can fix the application process and their interviews, we spoke with three analysts who have successfully secured $ 22 billion worth of internship at this company and continue to work and thrive there today as analysts.

This list includes everything from interview tips to general advice that these employees have used to help them navigate the interview process and ensure work at BlackRock. While some of the tips are specific to BlackRock and its unique recruitment process, many of them are universal and can be used throughout your professional career. We hope this helps make your first job or internship a little easier and encourages you to look for work with BlackRock – a company that has rocked the industry and provided lifelong careers for years.

1. Contact current employees

Turning to the current employees in the company is helpful for a number of reasons. Julia Coliton, an analyst at BlackRock, claims that her interactions with a BlackRock employee before applying made her more attractive to the position, prompting her to apply. Most people think about making connections with active employees to help them lead them through the finish line, which is true, but it can also help give you perspective on the actual job. Look for connections on LinkedIn, ask questions and do everything you can to improve the perspectives of those you communicate with, including yours.

Gain experience in activities / leadership

BlackRock is a company that values leadership experience in its employees. In fact, there is a whole part of their internship interview process dedicated to it. Not only will leadership experience allow you to do your job better and thrive as an employee, but it will make your application stand out from the rest. You will most likely apply with people who all have excellent grades and honors, so this is an area where you can really stand out.

3. Building a resume

Building a strong resume is something that most prospects can assume they need to invest in at the same time. But the ways in which you build this resume are enormous. One thing all the analysts we interviewed agreed on is to gather as much feedback on your resume as possible. Do you have a friend who has been in the professional world for a while? Share your resume with them. Do you have a good relationship with your professor? Let them look at it. If you feel bold enough, go and find a recruiter on LinkedIn and see if he will check it out. The more eyes you can put on it, the better.

4. Prepare for the virtual cover letter

The virtual cover letter is something unique to BlackRock’s interviews and application process and something that candidates may not be familiar with. Recognizing that the environment is unique and preparing for it accordingly is the best advice we have produced from the current employees with whom we spoke. Things like checking your lighting and background or practicing your birth in a “practice interview” yourself are all things that will help you be more prepared. Also, research as much as you can to help you deal with the questions that will be asked.

5. Overpreparation for the interview

After talking to current analysts at BlackRock, the general consensus about the interview was that you could never be too prepared. But what exactly does interview preparation mean? Julia claims that reading blog posts, watching podcasts and taking a closer look at the principles the company represents are all ways you can make sure you stay prepared for the list of questions you will be asked. In addition, the more information you have, the better equipped you will be to have an intelligent conversation and really make an impression on your interviewer.

6. Stay calm and be yourself

As much as it is important to maintain professional and focused behavior during an interview, it is also important to stay calm and be yourself. BlackRock is looking for employees who know how personal they are and want someone their co-workers will enjoy working with and being around. Sarah Praka, an analyst at BlackRock, encourages candidates to “show your personality and composure while speaking” to make meaningful contact with your interviewer. BlackRock is not a company looking for robots to join their company!

7. “Be a student of markets”

One of the most notable quotes we received during our interviews with three BlackRock employees was “Being a Student of the Markets.” Offered by Julia Coulton, what she meant by that was getting to know your industry inside and out. It is not enough just to over-acknowledge what is in your resume. You need to be able to speak intelligently and in depth about anything and everything in the world of finance. The more you can come up with real-world scenarios and quotes, the more you will chart your interviewer, convince him that you are passionate about what you do and the person they need to hire.

8. Track your interviewer

The last piece of information that all the employees we interviewed offered us was to follow up with your interviewer after your call. Make sure you ask them for their contact information if you do not already have it so you can contact them when the time comes. Do not be afraid to ask questions that you may be debating and thank them for their time. Normally, the decision will be made whether you follow them or not, but in some scenarios, this will be the last push needed to cross the finish line or the next round of interviews.

At the end of the day, try not to be nervous and know that if you follow all these steps, you have done your best to try and launch your career. BlackRock is a company that believes in diversity and inclusion and is proud to employ people from a variety of backgrounds, so they encourage people from all walks of life to apply.

Be yourself, be confident, and most importantly be prepared, and just maybe you will see that you can find a job at the largest asset management company in the world.
