Academic, Research and Teaching Talent Trends report summary

During the second year of the COVID-19 epidemic, there is growing global competition for leading academic, research and teaching talents. The world of higher education recruitment remains as competitive as ever, which is why at jobs.ac.uk we have conducted in-depth research to provide you with a better insight into the latest recruitment trends. We took a closer look at the 50,000+ job ads placed by higher education institutions in the UK and Ireland on our work board during the 2020-2021 school year.

We published 50,155 advertisements during this period, of which 63% were academic positions, research and teaching, 30% were professional, managerial and support positions and 7% were postgraduate and doctoral opportunities.

Of the 28,985 academic opportunities advertised, 86% were offered on a full-time basis, and 55% were in the salary range of £ 30,000 – £ 39,000.

We designed the report to replicate the academic categories of the research excellence framework and found that Category A – consisting of psychology, food agriculture and veterinary, biological sciences and health and medicine – was the most populous with 12,555 opportunities in all fields.

The most popular period of the year for publishing academic ads was June and July, without a doubt the completion of recruitment in time for the start of the new academic term in September / October.
