How to become a Data Scientist

Estimated salary

A data scientist has the task of extracting, analyzing and interpreting vast amounts of data using statistical tools and other techniques to produce useful findings for the business.

Once the data is interpreted, the findings will be presented to the business in a clear and perishable manner, making it easy for the recipients to understand.

Data scientists work in various sectors including finance, healthcare, retail, IT and many more. Businesses in these sectors produce a lot of data which, when well organized and analyzed, can be used to help the business operate more efficiently.

Typical roles of a data scientist include:

  • Working with the business to identify problems and provide solutions
  • Selection of the appropriate statistical techniques for the project
  • Using machine learning and other tools to produce solutions to problems
  • Presenting suggestions for improving data collection methods
  • Create reports to summarize what is happening within the business
  • Monitor technological developments to ensure the use of the most up-to-date and advanced methods

First of all, if you do not enjoy working with complex statistics and information systems, a data scientist may not be the job for you. People working in this role spend most of their time analyzing and interpreting data using the most advanced analytical tools – so you’ll also need a great eye for detail to get the job done.

However, if you enjoy working as part of a team and testing your knowledge to achieve the best result (see also: Data simulations) for a business, you will thrive in this job.

A good data scientist should be:

  • Excellent analytical thinking ability
  • Some experience working with surgical tools
  • Excellent listening and communication skills
  • Ability to work at strict times
  • Excellent time management skills
