Job search coaching is a special field that not everyone can do. Over the years I have worked with different professionals who do different things, and not many of them can, or want to, do job search training.
Besides a job coach, you might talk to a career counselor. Career counselors specialize in counseling about your career (Dove). Really, this is an important distinction. If you go to a career counselor who is looking for a job search job you may be disappointed. If I were going to a career counselor I would expect to talk about who I am, what I like, what I want to be when I grow up, and so on.
A career counselor will most likely make me make different career and personality assessments … maybe you remember I did something like that in high school or college. There is definitely a need for a professional of this type who helps steer people in the right direction and give them guidance on how to get there.
A job coach, however, is very different. I recognize that they can be the same person but the skills involved are different.
In job search training I am looking for someone who will give me an account of doing the right things in my job search.
Let me say this again, emphasizing:

Job search coaching and responsibilities
A job search coach will hold regular meetings with you. These can be daily, weekly, any other week, or maybe monthly. I personally do not like monthly because I think it is too far.
Depending on how often you meet your work coach may check in, or ask you to check in, between sessions. If I were your job coach (note: I do not do job search training) I would like you to send me a check-in in the evening, and maybe an email in the morning “Here’s what I do today”.
When I was looking for my job I did not have a coach. I was not responsible to anyone (except the bank, for my accounts!). I could do whatever I wanted with my time. I tried to be as diligent as I could but I’m sure if I had someone I was in charge of, with regular checks, I would be more efficient.
Responsibility is one of the most important things a job seeker needs, and a job search coach is the person who will hold you accountable.
Job search training and the right tactics
Job coaches also know … Wait, let me rephrase it: are good Job search coaches definitely know the tactics you need to use in your job search. But it does not cut cookies. Job search tactics for a child who has just dropped out of school versus coaching a senior principal are going to be different. Location (small town versus big city), the scope of your job search (international, etc.), industry nuances and other factors can greatly influence your right tactics.
In my job search in the 2006 Big Fat Failed, I somehow stuck to the worst job search tactics. A job coach would immediately identify this as a problem and coach me on what I needed to do. The job coach would help gain confidence to do the things I did not want to do (call people), and make sure my time was spent on high-value activities.
Job search coaches are in the trenches. They maintain tactics and observe how their customers get along with certain tactics. They become experts in current tactics that work. One of the mistakes we, in the industry, see is that people start looking for work based on tactics the last time they were looking, which could have been five or thirty years ago!

How to choose a job search coach
So how do you choose a job search coach? You do this carefully. For a minute in your job search you get to be on the interviewer side and look for the most suitable candidate for you!
Interview and research. Call them, talk to them. Crawl on their site. Request referrals.
One thing I did not know is that some coaches have certain specializations. If you are a CFO, for example, look for a job coach who works primarily, or exclusively, with CFOs. The value they can bring, because of their knowledge and insight in the industry, can be worth a lot compared to those who do not understand the unique challenges of finding a CFO job search. With age discrimination) etc.
Choose someone you think you would like to work with. However, do not forget that this is a business relationship with a very specific goal: to bring you a great job! Yes, you can and probably will become friends, or at least be friendly, but not always. Responsibility, by nature, will require a difficult call and they may call you at BS. It can be hard for some people to endure but if that’s what you need to get your job done, take it. And thank you for having the professionalism and courage to lead these difficult conversations!
In your network you may find people who have the job you want paid for job search training. If you have reached a point in the conversation, or in your relationship, ask them for referrals. Job search coaches change lives and impact families significantly, and their past clients remember them for a lifetime. Many times they will turn to friends and family because of the value brought by a job coach.
Of course money and commissions will affect who you choose to work for. But do not go for the cheapest if they do not mark your other requirements. I do not mean to guarantee that the most expensive person will be whatever you want them to be, but most of the coaches I know who are more expensive have earned their pay and are very, very good.
Personally, I would stay away from stores or factories where you do not really know who you are working with. Go to the training association’s website (check International Career Managers or Career thought leaders) And look for people who run their own business. You might want to check out Outfit companies, if they are highly recommended. But beware of organizations that seem hard to come by and it is impossible to understand who really works there.

As for doing the right thing, I did the wrong things in my job search. I was advised by people outside this space what to do, and it was also wrong (outdated). A job search coach should help you avoid outdated tactics and tactics that may seem like a good idea but do not achieve the results you need. How to find a job search coach?
In some of the additional tips above I have given you links to two nonprofits that have job search coaches (and resume writers) who are members of these nonprofits. I would start there. I met many of them at conferences. I had dinner with some of them, and communicated with them over the years. I know they love what they do. They like to help job seekers find meaningful and rewarding jobs. Many of them are constantly learning about current best practices, and have niches in which they specialize.
Look for job search coaches who understand and have experience in your job and / or industry (or, in the case of managers, who have senior job search experience). Remember it’s your time to interview them. You are the buyer and you can find the right person for your needs. Call them and you have significant questions. Learn about them, their guiding principles, their strategies and tactics, and how they can best help you. Learn about past wins and their clientele, and where they feel uncomfortable (which will help manage expectations). Search their website. Request referrals.
If you do not find the right job search coach from those associations, ask your peers and peers for recommendations. You may be surprised to find that many of the people you see at work have used job search coaches to help them in their careers.
