Recently, TopResume revealed its Job Search Sentiment Index, Which uniquely measures changes in the way job seekers feel about their career trajectory on a monthly-first basis in the industry. Over the past six months, TopResume has surveyed its active job seekers in the U.S. to assess both their job security and their overall sense of job security. The TopResume Seeker Sentiment Index, first calculated and established in April 2021, measures job seekers’ views on conditions Current as well as on future expectations of the job market and workplace.
“Between the vaccine launch and the big resignation, the last six months have been an emotional roller coaster for job seekers at every level, but especially for those in the early stages of their careers, making their optimism so refreshing – even as unemployment benefits fade,” said Amanda Augustine. TopResume career expert, who is also a certified professional career coach. “As an industry leader in career services, we have developed the TopResume Job Seeker Sentiment Index to allow us to keep our finger on the pulse of the job seekers’ journey amid so much uncertainty, so that we can best meet their evolving needs.”
To capture their confidence levels between this year and last year, as well as their optimism for their future forecasts, TopResume asked more than 10,000 U.S. job seekers the following questions:
- Do you think the job market is better or worse than it was a year ago?
- In general, do you think that the job security for most people is greater, the same or less than it was a year ago?
- Looking forward to a year from now, do you think the job market will be better, worse or about the same?
- Looking forward to a year from now, do you think job security for most people will be greater, less or about the same?
“Perhaps unsurprisingly, job seekers with fewer years of experience are less tired, and therefore, more hopeful than the older workforce, because they do not have the historical memory of previous economic downturns like the great recession of more than a decade ago,” he speculated. Augustine. “It will be interesting to see from the TopResume Seeker Sentiment index if their young optimism is maintained over the next few months – as well as the opposite for their more experienced counterparts – especially as we move towards the most popular period of the year to look for a new job.”
When asked about their overall job security, the increase in young workers’ overall confidence is directly related to their sentiment around current market conditions, which received a big jump in September 2021 from a score of 127 to 138 – 15% above the total U.S. population surveyed in September 2021 and higher in 9% of their reported sentiment in the previous month. However, the most experienced employees have reported lower morale in recent months, even though they share a similar starting point (See chart below).
methodology: Inspired by the same methodology used by the University of Michigan’s prestigious consumer sentiment index (UMCSENT), a TopResume Job Seeker Sentiment Index survey was conducted online in the United States between April 1, 2021 and September 30, 2021, among 10,091 adults. Results of 100 and above indicate an increase in positive sentiment Compared to the indices of April 2021, while feelings of 99 and below indicate an increase in negative sentiment Compared to indices. The company’s goal is to provide an accurate forecast of future job seekers’ trust and long-term job movement.
