What is Voice Dialogue and How Will It Help My Career?

Do you find that you are “of two minds” about what to do with your life or career? Do you have inspiring ideas one day and then the next day find yourself punching holes in them? Does your heart want to make a career move but your mind thinks it’s a bad idea? Do you feel stuck or indecisive? These may be the signs of a career block.

What is career blocking?

We have different parts of our personality (head and heart) and when these parts are in conflict or do not work together they can block us from progressing. For example, many times when people go through a change, they are willing to move forward, but hold back and are afraid at the same time.

If you have noticed a blockage, fear or problem floating around and it seems that your two parts are not working together, then the voice dialogue exercise can help.

Voice Dialog:

The Voice Dialogue process was part of my original training certification. At that time, the guide told us, “Customers will thank you for it.” She was right! The voice dialogue is an exercise I have done with almost everyone I have worked with since the launch of my coaching training in 2002 and everyone has thanked me. Why? Because being similar about how to advance in a career is exhausting, and performing this exercise releases that energy to use to help you advance.

How It Works:

  • In voice dialogue, we engage in dialogue with different parts / aspects / emotions to help you get through your block. You set a goal for what you want to achieve by following this process – examples: overcoming the blockage, understanding it, stopping the conflict, moving forward, etc. We will then clarify the blockage and identify two (or more) parts that are not working together.
  • Then as a facilitator, I take you through a series of thought-provoking questions to give each part a voice and work with the 2 parts to see what they need from each other to work together.
  • I then summarize the whole session and play the dialogue for each voice and what they need and want to give to each other. We conclude with an imaging exercise using symbols to represent the parts to aid in their integration.

Some clients experience an immediate sense of resolution, while for others the exercise is like a time release capsule and the resolution occurs over time. But everyone thanks me for the voice dialogue because they no longer feel stuck in an endless and negative internal dialogue! Contact me to share what keeps you from taking action to reach your career goals. If you feel stuck, it may be a career block that is holding you back. Voice dialogue can help!
