What to know before starting a remote job

Do not wait for your start date to start preparing. Preparation should begin immediately! Decide where your dedicated work environment will be and set it up so that it will be a comfortable and productive area for you. Make sure your WiFi connection is strong and close to an outlet. Living with a family or roommates? Be sure to establish ground rules with the people in your home. Starting a leap in the little things will make the difference when you start and allow you to focus on your new role. Then, if your new company is submitting any joining material (whether it’s an employee guide or best practices for working remotely), be sure to read it! If you have any questions or concerns, contact the recruitment manager or recruiter as soon as possible so that there are no barriers on the first day. If they send you IT-related material, make sure all applications and plugins are downloaded and ready to use. Finally, ask if there is an IT representative in case there are hardware or software issues in your first week.

The best preparation will eventually relieve much of the stress that comes with starting a new job – especially remote.

Understand expectations

With remote work, you do not have the luxury of contacting your manager with questions while you are adapting to your new job. It can be difficult to know if you are in the right direction. On your first day, make clear what you are responsible for – your manager, your team and the company as a whole. Use the time you spend with your manager to understand how your business and team measure success, and plan how you will impact. Confirm your standard working hours, communication preferences, daily priorities, and other metrics / KPIs.

Take the initiative and see what you can do to move forward as fast as possible. Are there any specific training materials that are worth considering? Do you need to overshadow certain colleagues? Do not leave the first day without understanding what is expected of you.

While it is easy to stay overly focused on your specific role when you first start, remember to think about the big picture as well. Acknowledge how your new responsibilities roll into overall business success. how? One idea is to schedule meetings with different departments to learn about other areas of the company. These are also great opportunities to meet with co-workers who may not work with them on a daily basis.

Ask questions to show that you are engaged and thinking ahead. Which co-workers prefer which communication methods, or are there company-wide guidelines that need to be followed? For example, would some teams prefer a video call while others would respond more quickly to an email? Should instant messaging be used only for urgent questions? Over time you will observe and adapt to the norms, but you should get to know them early.

As you continue to work, more questions will arise. Instead of calling your co-worker or boss every time you encounter hiccups, I will bundle your questions so you can ask them all at once.

Make connections

Working remotely does not mean you have to sacrifice the company culture. Engaging with your team members is still a must – especially when you’re new!

Start by introducing yourself to the people you need (important: team members, human resources, IT, etc.) Make a quick video call to get to know these people better. It should not be considered a “meeting”. Do this for a quick chat with coffee or lunch – try to emulate the social interactions you would normally have in an office space! Use this opportunity to ask questions such as general icebreakers, perks and benefits they enjoy, or tips on how to succeed in society. Making these connections early will make it easier to work with them down the road and give you great insight into your new company.

When a colleague helps you during your first week, be sure to thank him. A little gratitude can go a long way. Finally, ask your manager what meetings you can join and watch. Just presenting your face in meetings can help establish your presence in society and make future acquaintance smoother.
