Surviving the end of school year chaos — Rachel B. Garrett

Emails, confirmation slips, volunteer requests, fundraisers, concerts, parties, picnics, dances, field days, wind days, random midweek vacations…

Every day in the last month of the school year is filled with all these things and more that I’m too tired to remember.

Every year when this month’s batch creeps up on me, I start to feel panicked about how I’m going to get it all done.

Then the silence comes when I realize: I do not. And that’s okay.

I sit with my husband and children and say – what is most important here? And what can we cancel our consent because it is less important to all of us?

We just decided we were going to skip the middle school fundraiser. We bought the tickets so we donated and I donated my services to the auction, but we don’t have to go.

Because alternatively – we see the middle school musical… three times.

Where – as a busy working parent – can you simplify?

What can you tell yourself when you feel guilty?

What can you do to fix your relationship with your child when you inevitably mess up one (or more) of these things?

Is it just me or did another mom bring her kid to a birthday party a week early?

As early as you can, I recommend you do. And then just feel sorry for yourself when things don’t go according to plan.

Well, I’ll probably see some of you in all things in the next month or so because I need a break.

We’re in the field, folks!

Let’s get us all over the finish line.
